Many donors choose to establish or contribute to an endowed fund, creating a lasting legacy. Endowment funds are designed to provide a future and ongoing source of income for an organization. Contributions to the endowment are deposited in the fund, where the principal remains intact.

A portion of the earnings from the fund will provide ongoing annual support, over time, for various needs within Yeshiva Elementary School’s operating budget, while the remainder will be reinvested in the fund to keep pace with inflation. Endowment is the financial bedrock that provides long term stability for an institution.

The Twerski Family Legacy Endowment Fund at Yeshiva Elementary School was established in honor of this illustrious family, for the purpose of ensuring the continuity and future of their investment in Milwaukee's Jewish community.

About the Twerski Family:

Rabbi Yaakov Yisroel Twerski

Rabbi Yaakov Yisroel and his Rebbetzin, Devorah Leah Halberstam, both scions of Jewish Chassidic royalty, came to teach Torah in Milwaukee in 1927. With two young sons, and having survived the First World War they found an Eastern European Jewish community struggling to adapt to an American way of life which, while offering new freedoms, challenged all of their most precious traditions.

Their Rabbinate of over 50 years was marked by a concern for every Jew in the community. Their door was always open and their ears always open to listening. They were a virtual lighthouse offering direction and safety.

Rabbi Michel Twerski

When Rabbi Michel and his Rebbetzin, Feige Stein arrived in Milwaukee in 1961 to join with the Rabbi’s father and mother, they found a congregation that was aging, with fathers and sons separated by their experiences and memories. Their ongoing Rabbinate was dedicated to rebuilding the community. They opened an afternoon Hebrew School, vigorously advocated for the day school, and in 1989 founded Yeshiva Elementary School. They created “Orthodox Perspective” groups reaching out to young families.

Their home is always open. Their Shabbos and Yom Tov table is always filled with guests, and at every opportunity, they continue to talk about the Jewish family and the need for comprehensive Jewish education.

Rabbi Benzion Twerski

When Rabbi Benzion and his Rebbetzin, Chanie Meisels came to Milwaukee in 1989 to join in the Rabbinate of their family, they found a community experiencing growth, with the opening of Yeshiva Elementary School and the Milwaukee Kollel Center for Jewish Studies. Their Rabbinate has been marked by exponential growth in both numbers and quality of life. Yeshiva Elementary School now teaches more than 200 students in an award winning facility.

Their door is always open to new and old and in between. They are consummate teachers and outstanding parent mentors. And since they have arrived, the average age of the community has dropped by over 20 years.
